About Me

It’s May 2012, I’m driving on the highway in my car and the word jumps out in front of my eyes, OCMD!  My guitar buddy of the last 13 years at the time came up with the word. a Couple of old band mates and music friends were chilling the previous evening, OCMD  Why, what was it about, I told everyone I need a name for my place (and if I say my place I mean half of my house) which I want to convert into a music place where band’s can come and practice, so every one fooled around with names, you can imagine all the jokes, then my mate came up with OCMD! What’s it standing for, a couple of us asked at the same time, and very quickly he responded with OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE MUSIC DISORDER, because it’s a symptom he’s got, and his point is he can’t function without music for one day then he wants to go mad, yeah we did have a laugh and I complained about something like I don’t know if you can find something like a good disorder, Well, I know that anyone with music in him or if they’re able to play any kind of musical instrument knows how special music is for us and people who don’t do music don’t always understand why the heck we feel and do what we do so I suppose that’s why we are called muso’s, OCMD! Well, laughs or not everyone liked it and the name stuck and half of my house became OCMD Studios. Like I said, it happened one evening in May 2012.

But let me share a bit of my story, At the time of that evening my band of the last 12 years finally disbanded. We only had our own practice place since Sept 2007 and only because I converted one of the rooms in my house into a band room. I was thinking of all the years in my life I played in bands and all the strange places I had to practice in while member of a band…

Man, from outside rooms, garages, zozo huts, in a room on the 5th floor of the deserted Barclays bank Building in the middle of Jo’burg city, even in an old caravan, Imagine a 4 Piece rock ‘n roll band in a caravan, you could hardly see the floor, guitar and power cables wherever you looked, the roof was leaking and one night with the power plugs and wet cables I shocked myself in such a way I couldn’t  keep in proper 4/4 time with the band for a week, Haha, another evening we were practicing in a hall someone organised for us, at one stage an old oom busted through the door shouting, ag nee man, wat se disorder is dit die, every one ‘s trying to sleep, what’s wrong with you people, Jip ” musical disorder” and I can share countless stories but it made me think, are there still bands out there looking for a rehearsal space? Since my very first band in 1977 ( I’m giving my age away now ) but Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen said we’ll play till we drop.. and I say if I walk on the stage I feel young again even if it’s only in my head.

Any way what I was saying it was always fun and games when it came to practise places so I decided to start advertising rooms to rent for practice and use our old band room. The room has a basic PA System for vocals and can also be used for keyboard and accoustic guitars if needed. Vocalists normally prefer their own microphones but there are mic’s available. Guitar and Bass players must bring their own amps and guitar cables and the drummers preferably their own Snare drum, although there’s a full basic kit available, i’m only asking, keeping in mind the prices of skins, symbals etc. Safe parking for cars inside the premises. It’s R180 per practise session. Sessions available from Monday till Saturdays from 10 ‘o clock in the mornings till 11 ‘o clock in the evenings. And so it came that I started advertising in November 2013.  The first bands to book sessions were I Become and Ominous Reflections. I Become is still practising at OCMD and currently still one of the best metal bands in Gauteng. The longest I could hold out without playing in a band was about 14 months so I started a new band again, called Chapter 23 in August of 2013 forcing me to convert another room seeing that the bands started to rent our old band room. I also started a new project taking 2 rooms and started building a recording studio. My idea with this was also to give bands or any singers the opportunity to record their music and to try from my side not to make it impossibly expensive. I am building each and every part of that studio with my own hands and am very proud to be able to help other musicians who respectfully rehearsals and look after the space they rehearse in. So OCMD! studios started purely because of my love for music although slowly we’re doing more and more.
